South Africa’s Trade Minister, Ibrahim Patel, announced on Monday that South Africa’s auto industry will likely produce the first electric car in 2026 as part of the country’s plans to shift to green means of transportation that preserve the environment.
The use of electric transportation is one of the basic pillars of South Africa’s energy transition plan for a low-carbon economy capable of confronting climate change.
The energy transition plan requires investment in the transport sector of 128.1 billion rand ($6.84 billion) from 2023 to 2027 that effectively contributes to South Africa’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions.
