Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Monday that his country is aiming to achieve the transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy by accelerating the adoption of renewable energy sources.
A low-carbon economy (LCE) or decarbonised economy is an economy based on energy sources that produce low levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Speaking at 13th edition of the Petersburg Climate Dialogue which is taking place in Berlin, President Sisi said Egypt currently works on increased use of smart transport networks.
The Egyptian president reiterated his call to global financial institutions to mobilise efforts and provide more support for developing countries in order to face climate change.
He further said various global crises “place great responsibilities on our shoulders to achieve the goals of the Paris Conference and the outcomes of the Glasgow Climate Conference 2021 (COP26).
Petersburg dialogue has become an important forum to mobilise international consensus on the political level on climate action, the Egyptian president noted.
He added that Egypt will be hosting the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27) by next November amid a number of crises, notably in the field of energy and food, the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.
Since 2009, Germany has been convening the Petersburg Climate Dialogue ahead of annual UN Climate Change Conference for preliminary discussions.
The invitation by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for President Sisi to co-chair the Petersburg Climate Dialogue comes in appreciation of Egypt’s vital role under its leadership in the framework of climate change negotiations over the past years, said Egypt’s Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady said in a statement.
