Egyptian Railway Authority (ERA) has signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding with Transmashholding, Russia’s largest manufacturer of locomotives and rail equipment.
Upon the MoU, Transmashholding is set to manufacture and supply Egypt with 700 air-conditioned passenger trains. In addition, the Russian firm shall secure the financing required to implement the Egyptian deal.
The MoU was signed by Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Sahar Nasr and Minister of Transport Saad El-Gioushy.
The MoU is in line with the Egypt government’s plan to modernise the rail infrastructure in the country.
Transmashholding Company includes 14 engineering and production sites in Russia and one production and engineering site in Germany. Russian Railways is the company’s biggest customer. Transmashholding has major customers in Bulgaria, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Serbia. The company manufactures and sells subway cars, passenger diesel locomotives, diesel engines, freight cars, flat cars, and diesel trains.
