Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib was censured by the House of Representatives last Tuesday night for standing up for Palestine.
Republicans and some members of her own party voted for a resolution claiming that she had been “promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”
The tally was 234 yes votes to 188 no votes.
This was the second time that Tlaib was censured in a resolution over her criticism of Israel.
Tlaib defended herself on the House floor earlier Tuesday and explained her views on the deadly situation.
Tlaib’s critics said she used the phrase “from the river to the sea,” which is considered by some a call for ending Israel’s existence.
However, she said it’s “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”
“I can’t believe we have to say this, but Palestinian people are not disposable,” she added.
“Speaking up to save lives no matter faith, no matter ethnicity should not be controversial in this chamber. The cries of the Palestinian and Israeli children sound no different to me. What I don’t understand is why the cries of Palestinian children sound different to you all. We cannot lose our shared humanity.”
The Israeli aggression on the Gaza strip has killed more than 11,180 innocent civilians in a month.
