English actress Olivia Colman joined 1,300 artists in signing an open letter accusing cultural institutions in the West of censoring Palestinian voices, press reported on Tuesday.
In the letter, art and cultural institutions in the West are accused of “repressing, silencing and stigmatising Palestinian voices and perspectives.”
According to the letter, the silencing includes “targeting and threatening the livelihoods of artists and arts workers who express solidarity with Palestinians,”
It also includes “cancelling performances, screenings, talks, exhibitions and book launches.” of these artists.
The artists, including actors and actresses, sigers, and writers all agree that despite the ongoing threats, they continue to follow “their conscience,” and speak up.
The letter also references the firing of Melissa Barrera from Scream movie franchise for alleged “hate speech.”
It also mentions the cancellation of Ai Weiwei’s London exhibition due to his supportive comments to Palestinians.
