by Sama Mousa

The New York Times announced on Sunday that it will not pay a monthly fees for a verified check mark status on Twitter. The decision came hours after the newspaper lost its verified badge on the social media platform.

According to Twitter’s new policy, verifications are now only offered through a paid subscription of $1,000 per month for a gold check mark and $7 as a starting price for blue checks in the US.

The newspaper’s spokesperson said “we also will not reimburse reporters for Twitter Blue for personal accounts, except in rare instances where this status would be essential for reporting purposes.”

According to Reuters, Politico as well will not offer to pay for its staff’s Twitter blue verifications. However, Axios reported that The White House will not pay to have its staff’s official accounts on Twitter verified.

Twitter has announced earlier that starting April, several accounts will lose their check marks.
