The investments of Italy’s leading tour operator Eden Viaggi in Egypt have sagged by 70 percent, director Franco Campazzo told Amwal Al Ghad Tuesday.
“Company’s business volume in Egypt recorded US$100 million before the 25th of January revolution then declined gradually due to security and political turbulences to record US$30 million currently, ” Campazzo stated.
The official made these remarks on the sidelines of ‘Tourism in Egypt 2016 – Planning for Growth’ conference that took place on 23 February.
The one-day conference brought together senior executives from around the world who share an interest in the development of tourism in Egypt, including representatives from airlines, hotels, and tour operators.
He said that Eden Viaggi is currently operating four flights to Egypt every week in comparison to 12 flights per week within the last years.
“The demand on the Egyptian tourism has dropped 90 percent after the death of Giulio Regeni,” the official clarified.
Regeni , a postgraduate student at Britain’s University of Cambridge, disappeared on the fifth anniversary of the start of the uprising that ended former leader Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. He was founded dead by a roadside in Cairo with cigarette burns and other signs of torture on his body.
Director Campazzo noted that the Italian firm seizes 28 percent of the Italian tourism incoming to Egypt.
