Italy sets renewable power production target of two thirds by 2023

Italy has set a target to generate two thirds of its electricity from renewble energy sources by 2030, said Italy’s Minstry of Energy on Friday.
The country’s renewable energy target target of 65 percent by 2030 has gone up, previously being 55 percent, following a revision of Italy’s energy and climate plan.
Renwable energy is expected to cover 40 percent of gross energy consumption in all the sectors, including power production, housing, and transportation, by 2030, previously being 30 percent.
There is a target of 37 percent for renewable sources to cover consumption, and 31 percent of transport sector coverage, with ambitions for hydrogen produced without carbon emissions to cover 42 percent of industrial needs by 2030, the ministry said.
The European Commission had previously asked every member state to submit a revised strategy for 2030 to allogn with the Fit-for-55 and REPowerEU energy packages, which include binding goals on the energy transition to tackle climate change.
