Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, warned employees that more layoffs are likely at the Alphabet-owned company this year, as per a Reuters report citing The Verge.
In an internal memo, Pichai stated that this year’s layoffs were concentrated on eliminating layers to streamline operations and increase productivity in specific areas.
This latest move confirms the indications that the company will be implementing automation and artificial intelligence software to reduce labour costs this year.
“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team,” Pichai memo to employees stated.
“We have ambitious goals, and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” he said..
Google declined to provide additional details of the memo to Reuters, despite acknowledging that an email had been sent to every employee.
Notably, Google announced last week that it would be laying off several employees from its augmented reality team, hardware teams that work on Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit, and advertising sales teams.
Similarly, Alphabet announced plans to reduce 12,000 jobs, or 6 per cent of its global workforce, in January 2023. As of September 2023, Google workforce reached 182,381 worldwide.
