Major European allies of Israel, such as Britain, Germany, and France, are emphatically calling for a halt to hostilities due to the escalating humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
The French Foreign Minister urged on December 11 for an “immediate and lasting” cessation of hostilities to prevent the disastrous consequences in the besieged area since the assault that took place on the seventh of October. While the foreign ministers of Britain and Germany were advocating for a “permanent ceasefire.”
“Right now we want to see immediate humanitarian pauses and we want them to lead to a sustainable ceasefire as soon as possible,” a spokesman for the UK’s Prime Minister said on Monday.
He continued, “We do not believe that calling right now for a general and immediate ceasefire, hoping it somehow becomes permanent, is the way forward.”
Recent days have witnessed a significant change in Western attitudes towards the conflict initiated by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip 73 days ago.
Analysts suggest that the shift in Western and American views on the Gaza war is largely due to internal pressure caused by the high civilian death toll from “indiscriminate Israeli bombing.”
Abdul-Masih Al-Shami, the coordinator of German-Arab relations in the German parliament, stated to Sky News Arabia that there is a collaboration between European nations, particularly “Britain, Germany, and France,” and the Israeli government.
Al-Shami pointed out that these countries were initially the most supportive of the Israeli operation, and their calls to international public opinion are coordinated with Israel.
He added that he doesn’t believe that the German and British stances can ever be against Israel because reality confirms that these countries are the most supportive of the Israeli operation at first.
Al-Shami also said that the German and British positions can be anti-Israel at any time or place, because this matter is not practical on the ground, given the relations that collect those countries in Batel Aviv.
