Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has signed a MoU with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to provide a cooperation framework in the areas of environmental sustainability and decarbonisation, its statement said on Tuesday.

The MoU came as part of the Authority’s efforts to convert the Suez Canal to a green channel as part of Strategy 2020.

This step is a result of fruitful cooperation and discussions with ABS to benefit from its long experience in environmental sustainability field, SCA’s chairman Osama Rabie noted.

Rabie explained the Suez Canal’s green transition had begun before the signing of the memorandum, referring to the SCA’s current reliance on clean energy to both operate the pilotage stations along the canal and respond to oil spills.

The recent development project of the canal’s navigational course is a key factor in achieving environmental sustainability as it raised the canal’s efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, the statement mentioned.

The MoU was signed by a representative of the Suez Canal board Abu Al-Fatouh, while Christopher Greenwood, Business Development Director at the American Bureau of Navigation ABS.
