Egypt’s revenues from the Suez Canal rose 15.8 percent year-on-year to $551.5 million in April, the head of the canal authority said on Thursday.

In April 2020, revenues stood at $476.2 million.

“April 2021 has witnessed unprecedented growth in revenues, number of ships and tonnages.” Osama Rabie said during the Pivotal Role of the Suez Canal in the Mediterranean Sea and Global Maritime Economy webinar.

A total of 1,814 ships passed the Suez Canal with a total net load of 110 million tonnes in April, compared with 102 million tonnes in the same month last year, Rabie added.

A total of 1,814 ships transited with a total net load of 110 million tonnes in April, up from 1,731 ships of 102 million tonnes in the same month last year.

The canal has managed to response to various events and cope with crises, notably the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic owing to adopting flexible marketing policies to attract all types of vessels, the Egyptian official said.
