Egypt’s national death rate has fallen 2.8 percent in April, the country’s coronavirus peak month, compared to the same month in 2019 and 2018, the cabinet’s think tank said in a statement on Sunday.
The pandemic “has not led to an increase in the national mortality rate,” a statement released by the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) said.
Deaths reported in April stood at 42,144 deaths, compared to 43,303 deaths in the same period in 2019, and 43,399 deaths in 2018, IDSC said in an infographic sent to Ahram Online.
The figures are based on data provided by the country’s ministries of planning and health, a cabinet spokesman told Ahram Online.
Though Cairo has the biggest number of coronavirus cases in the country according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the IDSC said that the death rate in the capital dropped 7.3 percent in April compared to the same month last year.
The governorates of Daqahlia, Assuit, and Damietta also witnessed a fall in April death rate compared to the same period last year.
To date, Egypt has recorded 9,400 cases, including 525 fatalities and 2,075 recoveries.
The coronavirus death rate in Egypt is still “within safe limits compared to [other] countries around the world,” said the IDSC.
In mid-April, the death rate from the virus in the country passed 7.5 percent of confirmed cases.
