Egypt continued to record daily coronavirus cases above the 1000-case threshold for the sixth day in a row, with 1,333 new infections reported on Tuesday.

According to the Egyptian health ministry bulletin, the total infection tally since the outbreak began in February hit to 135,233.

Tuesday’s infection toll is down from 1,359 a day earlier.

The health ministry also reported 54 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 7,520.

The statement said that 604 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 111,040.

On Monday, Egypt recorded the biggest single-day tolls  in almost five months, with 1,359 new cases, and 61 fatalities.

Despite reporting low rates over the past months, more than 1,000 people have been infected every day since Thursday, with daily deaths rates hovering at 40-50.

The country is currently witnessing a second wave of the coronavirus.

As of Sunday, a number of measures will be taken to curb the spread of the virus, including the imposition of an immediate EGP 50 fine for not wearing masks in public starting.

The government also banned all New Year’s Eve celebrations and maintained restrictions on occupancy for hotels, restaurants and cafes.
