Egypt and Sudan will commence the operation of a joint electricity grid from January 12 with a capacity of 50 megawatts, Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported on Sunday.

Spanning over 1,000 km (621 miles), the project’s cost has amounted to 509 million Egyptian pounds ($31.74 million), MENA said, citing Egypt’s electricity minister Mohamed Shaker.
