Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company on Wednesday signed a deal with Cyprus’ Euro Africa Interconnector to connect the power grids of Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece through Crete, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Cabinet on Wednesday.
The Interconnector is an energy highway bridging Africa and Europe. It will have the capacity to transmit 2,000 megawatts of electricity in either direction. Annual transmission capacity is 17.5 terawatt hour, much more than the annual production of Aswan Dam power stations.
The energy system in Egypt has become so strong, with huge capacities and developed networks, energy minister Mohamed Shaker said.
Shaker stated earlier that the Egyptian government was planning to cut all subsidies on electricity by 2022.
