Egypt begins Cairo Metro Line 4’s Phase I in FY15

Egypt will start carrying out the first phase of Cairo’s underground fourth line project within the fiscal year of 2015-16, said Ismail El-Nagdy, Chairman of National Authority for Tunnels (NAT).

Speaking to Amwal Al Ghad on Tuesday, El-Nagdy revealed that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will contribute $1.2 billion to the project; whereas the Egyptian government is due to cover a sum of $2.4 billion.

Through 2 phases, Cairo Metro Line 4 is planned to run from Haram District reaching the New Cairo district connecting Greater Cairo from West to East.

Phase 1 of the project will run from El-Malek El-Saleh Station (Interchange with Line 1) to the October-Oasis Highway Station with a total length of 18 km, passing through Giza Railway Station (Interchange with Line 2).

Moreover, NAT chairman further stated that Japan’s government has expressed interest to finance the second phase of Cairo Metro Line 4. Japan is currently in talks with the Egyptian counterparts over making $1.2 billion contribution to the second phase project as well, he noted.
