Egypt reported on Friday 1,577 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day increase recorded so far, bringing the total number of cases to 41,303, Ahram Online reported.
The health ministry’s daily bulletin also recorded 45 fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,422.
The ministry said that 417 patients had fully recovered and were discharged from isolation hospitals and quarantine facilities. The total number of recoveries from the highly contagious virus now stands at 11,108.
The number of patients who have re-tested negative via PCR test, including the complete recoveries, has now reached 12,493, ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.
The head of the ministry’s committee on combating COVID-19, Hosam Hosny, said on Wednesday that the number of new cases will continue to rise in June until they reach between 2,000 and 2,500 new cases per day.
Hosny, speaking in a call with Sada Al-Balad channel, said that June will be Egypt’s peak month, and that it is expected that the number of cases will stabilise in the first week of July, and then start decreasing.
