China has initiated the large-scale production of the carbon-14 isotope using a commercial nuclear reactor, as reported by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) cited by Xinhua.
The Qinshan nuclear power plant, managed by a CNNC subsidiary, is responsible for the production of this carbon-14 isotope, an official from the plant told Xinhua on late Saturday.
The official anticipates that the output of this carbon-14 isotope will be sufficient to fully satisfy China’s market demand.
This development is expected to terminate China’s heavy dependence on imported carbon-14 isotopes, the official added.
Carbon-14 has a variety of applications in research, medicine, agriculture, and other fields. By having a reliable domestic source, China can ensure access to this important isotope for various industries, according to Gemini research.
