Egypt’s capital of Cairo has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country, followed by the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, said a health presidential adviser on Saturday.

To date, Egypt has recorded 9,400 cases, including 525 fatalities and 2,075 recoveries.

It took Egypt 51 days to reach its first 1,000 cases, eight days to its second 1,000, less than three days to its the latest 1,000 cases, and almost two days to its 1,000.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s health adviser Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din attributed the spike in the number of cases to an “expected rise” as part of the normal course of the virus outbreak, a growing number of tests conducted in recent weeks. This is in addition to closer monitoring by health authorities of suspected cases and those who were in contact.

Egypt to flatten the curve soon

Tag El-Din told Al-Arabiya El-Hadth TV channel that the country would be able to flatten the curve in the near time.

“As long as methods to identify coronavirus patients are improving, we are on the right path,” Tag El-Din said.

Egypt will reach a plateau when the daily number of cases remains steady for several days, he added.

After that the infection numbers will start falling and the country will pass its coronavirus peak, which he expects would happen “soon”, Tag El-Din said.
