The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said providing financial services to all segments of the society is part of the national economic reform programme, noting that the number of users of ‘Meeza’ national payment card have reached 500,000 since its launch in December.

In a statement on Tuesday, the CBE said launching this payment system comes within the framework of the bank’s plans that aim at making the Egyptian society less dependent on banknotes and in line with directives of the National Payments Council to the governmental bodies which offer public services to citizens.

CBE Deputy Governor Lubna Helal stressed the necessity of maintaining fruitful cooperation between the bank and the government to achieve the national strategy of digital banking and financial technology.

Helal pointed to the importance of MoUs signed between the bank and other governmental bodies like the Solidarity Ministry, the Financial Regulatory Authority, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, and the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combating Unit to press ahead with the implementation of this strategy.

Being able to efficiently provide financial services to all citizens especially youth and women is a great step that will help in their economic empowerment and raising their standard of living, she further added.
