Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi discussed in separate meetings on Wednesday with Germany’s interior and foreign federal ministers security cooperation as well as the latest developments in Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and Syria.

Sisi, who is in Germany on an official visit, discussed with German FM Heiko Maas the latest regional developments, stressing that addressing the challenges facing the region requires continued efforts by the international community.

The president also stressed “the importance of pushing forward the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis, pointing out the need to reach a comprehensive deal between the two sides to end the conflict and pave the way for the region to achieve economic and social development,” according to a statement by the Egyptian presidency.

In his meeting with German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, Sisi hailed the developments in relations between both countries, especially regarding security and combating terrorism and extremism.

Sisi praised a security cooperation agreement signed between Cairo and Berlin in July 2016, as well as efforts by both sides to foster cooperation in this domain as well as in combating irregular migration.

Sisi also praised a mutual cooperation agreement signed in August 2017 to address the economic and social roots of irregular migration, and stressed the importance of continuing coordination in combating terrorism and irregular migration.

“The president stressed the need for the international community to intensify its efforts and adopt a comprehensive strategy that seeks to solve the root causes of these problems by supporting economic and social development efforts,” the presidency’s statement said.

Both German ministers hailed Egypt’s efforts and achievements in different areas, especially in implementing economic reforms.

German FM Maas stressed during his meeting with Sisi his country’s keenness to boost cooperation and investment.

German investments in Egypt are estimated at 1.5 billion euros and provide around 22,000 jobs, according to statements by the German ambassador to Egypt in February 2017.
