Sugar reserve sufficient until February : Egypt’s Cabinet

by Noha Gad

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail met Thursday with agriculture, trade, finance, supply, and public enterprise sector ministers to showcase current reserves of strategic commodities.

During the meeting, Supply Minister Mohamed Ali Al-Shikh stated that Egypt’s sugar reserve is sufficient until the end of February 2017.

In a report, the minister noted that Egyptian ports -i.e. Damietta, Safaga, and Dhekelia- have recently received 155,000 tonnes of sugar.

Al-Shikh asserted that all reserves of strategic commodities are safe and sufficient as the ministry issued a tender for supplying rice as pursuant to government’s plan to provide a strategic reserve for the upcoming six months.

The report showed that Egypt’s reserves of wheat are sufficient for coming six months after receiving around 360,000 tonnes of imported wheat.

During the meeting, Premier Ismail asked the ministers to supervise and follow up local markets so as to make sure that all strategic commodities are available in the markets with affordable prices.
