Egypt’s bill of imported intermediate commodities fell by 5.2 percent in January-May 2016 to 80.1 billion Egyptian pounds (US$9 billion) from 84.5 billion pounds a year earlier.
The monthly bulletin of foreign trade data released by state’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed that the volume of imported intermediate commodities declined in May 2016 by 8.6 percent to 16.6 billion pounds versus 18.2 billion in May 2015.
During the first five months of 2016, cement imports sagged to 23.5 million pounds compared to 67 million at the same period of 2015, marking a 96.5 percent drop.
Parts of motor vehicle imports decreased by 4.3 percent in January-May 2016 to 3.9 billion pounds opposed to 4 billion pounds at the same period of 2015.
On other side, Egypt’s imports of raw sugar rose during the first five months of 2016 to 42.4 million pounds from 20.5 million pounds a year earlier, marking a 106.7 percent increase.
