ECCAS removes sanctions on Gabon

by Aya Anwar

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) has decided to remove sanctions on Gabon and reintegrate it into the regional bloc, as per a Reuters report on Sunday.

This resolution comes six months after Gabon’s membership was suspended due to a coup that ousted President Ali Bongo. Gabon’s Foreign Minister, Regis Onanga Ndiaye, announced the decision was reached during a meeting in neighboring Equatorial Guinea, as revealed in a televised address late on Saturday.

While the bloc itself did not issue a statement, Burundi’s Foreign Minister, Albert Shingiro, confirmed the agreement to lift sanctions in a post.

Following the coup on August 30th, the bloc suspended Gabon’s membership and all related activities, pending the restoration of constitutional order.

Despite the junta remaining in power, they declared their intention in November to hold elections in August 2025.
