Egypt will launch a national strategy to be a leading green hydrogen producer and exporter, said Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker on Tuesday.
“Green hydrogen is crucial to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and boosting the green energy transition, and it will become a key global source of energy in the near future,” Shaker added.
The minister’s statement were made during his speech at the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference (GEIC), in Shanghai, China.
The conference aims to develop global plans for energy, climate, the environment, and sustainable development.
The strategy will enhance Egypt’s competitive capabilities and will allow it to achieve its ambitious plans in the hydrogen sector.
Egypt is currently targeting up to 8 percent of the global tradable market by 2040, Shaker said.
Shaker also said that green hydrogen production might support Egyptian industrial energy needs and reduce its dependence on petroleum imports.
