U.S. tech giant Apple Inc expressed interest in buying Manchester United in under a stunning £5.8 billion ($7 billion) deal, the Daily Star reported on Thursday.
The UK football owners, the Glazers have decided to sell the club after caving in to the demands of those fans who have wanted them ousted.
Floated on the stock exchange for £6.7 million in 1991, it was later bought by U.S. billionaire Malcolm Glazer in 2005. This ownership proved unpopular with fans, reports The Daily Star, resulting in the club being offered for sale.
The Glazers will sell the club to the highest bidder – and bosses of Apple have expressed an interest in discussing a potential takeover deal.
Though the California-based firm have no experience of owning a football club the size of United, its CEO Tim Cook is keen to explore the opportunities owning the club could provide. He would even line up talks with the banks appointed to oversee the sale, which include The Raine Group, the Daily Star added.
Part of Cook’s plan could include Apple funding the building of a new state-of-the-art stadium that would be the best in the world.
The Glazers had initially set a price of £8.25 billion, as exclusively reported by the Daily Star Sport.
If Apple were to complete a deal it would make Manchester United the richest club in the world.
