World Bank President Robert Zoellick congratulated Mohamed Morsi and the people of Egypt for electing the country’s first leader through democratic process.
“This is an important step along Egypt’s path to democracy. It is an historic moment for Egypt and for the entire Arab world,” Zoellick said.
Egyptian citizens, in particular young people, stepped forward in the tumultuous January of 2011, and they will look to Morsi as the President-elect to bring together a new government, he said in a statement.
Noting that the World Bank Group looks forward to supporting the new government as it embraces the aspirations of all citizens, he said Egypt has tremendous economic promise. “It also has the possibility to seek inclusive growth that will create jobs and to bring together citizens from all walks of life with the ”freedom and dignity” that has been the rallying cry of change,” Zoellick said, according to PTI.
