Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City premieres at Cannes

Director Wes Anderson’s newest space-themed film, Asteroid City, premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Tuesday.

The star-studded film includes Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston, Margot Robbie, and Maya Hawke.

The film, which is set in the 1950s, received a six-minute standing ovation, and the premiere was attended by the cast and Anderson, along with other celebrities like Matt Dillon and Hope Davis.

The film is about the fictional southwestern town, Asteroid City, which is famous for its meteor crater and observatory, and as the town hosts a convention for young scientists, a UFO disrupts the celebration and turns their lives upside down. Schwartzman’s character, Augie Steenbeck, is a war photographer who is grieving the death of his wife, with his three daughters and son, stop at Asteroid City after their car breaks down.

Asteroid City is Anderson’s third film to compete at Cannes, following his 2021 film, The French Dispatch.
