UK retailer Debenhams opened Saturday evening its first store in Cairo. UK Deputy Ambassador Stephen Hickey has cut the ribbon at the store opening at Cairo Festival City Mall.

The UK’s second largest department store chain is already present in Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city, since 2010 with one store at Carrefour City Centre.

Debenhams announced in 2013 expansion plans covering the Middle and Far East as demand from the region helped boost its overall sales.

Debenhams’ total revenues grew by 2.3 percent to £2.28 billion in the year to 30 August.

On its website, Debenhams indicates having 240 stores across 28 countries. Debenhams is present in the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Jordan.

Cairo Festival City Mall opened in Cairo in November 2013. It is described as premier mixed-use for the urban community in Egypt.

The mall is developed by Al-Futtaim Group Real Estate Egypt, part of the Dubai-based Al-Futtaim Group.

The mall houses Egypt’s first IKEA store, the Swedish furniture manufacturer, and a Marks & Spencer store.
