The United States has surpassed Italy on Saturday, having the most coronavirus deaths in the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
At least 20,071 have died in the U.S., according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. Italy has suffered 19,468 deaths from the virus, while Spain has recorded at least 16,353. France has reported so far 13,851 deaths.
Meanwhile, hospitalisations seemed to be plateauing in New York, the epicentre of the outbreak in the United States, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference on Saturday.
During a press conference Saturday, he said 783 people died of the virus in New York on Friday, bringing the state’s death toll to 8,627.
The more than 5,600 fatalities in the city account for roughly one-third of all confirmed U.S. deaths from the pandemic.
