Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Chairman Yildirim Demiroren said on Tuesday that Turkey had submitted its official bid to host the 2020 European Championship.
“We bid for the second largest football tournament in the world to be played in our country,” Demiroren was quoted as saying by the semi-official Anatolia news agency. “As you all are aware, we lost the bid for the Euro 2016 by just one vote.”
The European football body UEFA began the bidding process for the 2020 European Championship last month, saying that a decision on the venue would be reached in late 2013 or early 2014.
Joint bids are likely to be allowed for the 24-nation tournament, which involves 51 matches being played over a month. The Netherlands and Belgium co-hosted the competition in 2000, Switzerland and Austria in 2008, and Poland and Ukraine will this year.
