Peru’s total coronavirus cases have surpassed 15,000 on Sunday, becoming the second-highest in Latin America.
The virus continues to ravage the economy of the world’s No. 2 copper producer.
The Peruvian central bank said on Sunday the economy had been “severely affected” temporarily by simultaneous supply and demand shocks.
The health crisis has paralyzed Peru and left millions without jobs.
Peru reported its first coronavirus case on March 6 and took 25 days to hit 1,000 cases. However, it took only 14 more days to pass 10,000 cases on April 14, according to a Reuters tally.
To date, Peru has confirmed a total of 15,628 infections and 400 deaths, the health ministry said.
In Latin America, only Brazil reported more cases.
