Peres Highlights Nuclear Iran and Islamist Extremism in Video Address to Arab Leaders

President Shimon Peres spoke via video link during a summit organized and attended by 29 representatives of the Arab and Muslim world, his spokeswoman said Monday.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner made the address two weeks ago with the broadcast shown to a group of 29 foreign ministers attending the Gulf States Security Summit in Abu Dhabi.

Peres spoke during the video presentation with Terje Roes-Larsen, a Norwegian envoy from the United Nations, and Martin Indyk, U.S. special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

The event, initially reported by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Aharonoth and confirmed Monday by Peres’ spokeswoman, saw the 90-year-old addressing topics that included the countries’ joint battle against Islamist extremism and Iran’s nuclear program.

Peres also shared his vision for peace in the region.

Israel, which has signed peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan, has failed to normalize relations with the majority of Arab countries.
