Omantel recently organised a workshop on information security. A number of information security professionals from Oman and abroad participated in the workshop. The event is part of Omantel’s plans to enrich the ICT sector and update professionals on the latest developments in this important field. It was also part of the curriculum of Oman Telecommunications Institute, which will be officially launched later this month.
The workshop included a number of important papers by renowned speakers. Dr Badr al Manthri of the Information Technology Authority (ITA) presented a working paper on ‘Cloud Computing’ — the use of computing resources that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet). The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Cloud computing entrusts remote services with a user’s data, software and computation.
Berry Luis, CEO of Surprise LLC, a company specialising in information security, training and consultancy, presented a paper on ISO 27002 certification for Mobile Phone Technologies Audit.
The second session included a paper by Albert J Marcille, CEO of Business Automation Consultancy, on ‘Information Security Management’. Manal al Harthi, Project Leader, commented: ‘IT Security is of growing global interest. This workshop comes in line with the Company’s efforts to keep pace with recent developments in the ICT field. We are thrilled that we have been able to attract renowned global and local professionals to speak about IT security to our corporate customers.”
“The workshop also covered a number of important themes on information security, such as how to secure networks against breaches, manage risks, as well as other issues of interest. We have tried to provide space and time for discussions to come out with applicable recommendations and visions,” she added.
Omantel had earlier organised a seminar on information security in collaboration with First Information Security LLC, one of the leading information security providers.
