Egypt’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced that it has not yet set a timetable for the country’s upcoming presidential elections, which are scheduled for next year.
The NEC, which was created in August, is an independent authority with sole responsibility for supervising general elections and referendums in Egypt.
The 10-member commission is led by the head of the Court of Cassation.
According to the Egyptian constitution, the president of Egypt is elected using the two-round system. Election proceedings are to begin no later than 120 days before the end date of the current presidential term, which ends on 7 June 2018.
Results are to be announced no later than 30 days before the end of the current presidential term.
The last presidential elections, where President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was elected, were held in May 2014.
El-Sisi secured 96 percent of the vote over his sole competitor; leftist politician and leader of the Egyptian Popular Current Hamdeen Sabahi.
El-Sisi officially assumed office on 8 June 2014.
