A Cairo court has lifted the gag order on media coverage of the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak on various charges, setting the stage for court sessions to be televised when they resume in two weeks.
The Cairo Criminal Court adjourned on Saturday the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak, his two sons Gamal and Alaa, business tycoon Hussein Salem, and former interior minister Habib El-Adly and his six aides until 22 March.
The defendents are being re-tried on a number of charges in a joint case. Mubarak, his two sons and Salem face corruption charges, while the former president, El-Adly and his six aides face charges of killing protesters during the 2011 revolution.
The court set dates for the sessions between 22 March and 6 May for the defence to make its case.
In June 2012, a court convicted Mubarak and El-Adly and sentenced them to life in prison on the murder charge, but a retrial was ordered in January 2013 because of “procedural failings.”
