Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif won the Valencia Open 2023 title on Sunday evening to rank 31 in the world rankings. She went up from number 40 in just two weeks, becoming Egypt’s highest-ranking tennis player in history at the age of 27.
She won the title after defeating Spanish tennis player Marina Bassols Ribera 6-3, 6-3. Mayar was also the top seed in the tournament, with a dominant run until the final without dropping a set in the championship.
This year, she has reached the second round of the French Open as well as winning the Makarska Open. In May, she defeated Caroline Garcia, one of the top five players in the world, during the Madrid Open 2023.
“So happy to win another title here at the BBVA Open Val! Thanks to you, my team, my family, my sponsors, and my fans for all the support I received in the past two weeks,” the champion said on her Facebook account.
