Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Development Headquarters of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Abulqassem Mozafari announced that his organization is constructing the world’s tallest double-curvature dam in Southwestern Iran.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Wednesday, Mozafari said after success in projects such as Karkheh and Gotvand construction dams, the staff voiced their preparedness to implement the project for construction of a 315-meter-long dam which is the world’s tallest double-curvature concrete dam, Fars News Agency reported.

He said preparatory stages have already started, and added, “The dam will be constructed on Bakhtiari River, tributary of Dez River, and we have started preliminary operations for equipping its workshop, (digging) deviation tunnels and (constructing) access roads.”

The Bakhtiari River is a tributary of the Dez River in Southwestern Iran. Before forming the Dez, the Bakhtiari has a confluence with the Sezar River.

Also in July 2012, Iran’s highest roller-compact concrete (RCC) dam in the country’s Southwestern province of Khuzestan was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

President Ahmadinejad inaugurated the Upper Gatvand Dam, which is located five kilometers from the city of Gatvand and has the country’s second largest reservoir after the Karkheh Dam.

The new dam measures 182 meters in height and creates a pond with an area of 90 square kilometers, and will supply Khuzestan with 4.5 billion cubic meters of water.
