Hillary Clinton maintains big lead over Bernie Sanders in New York, poll shows

by Yomna Yasser

U.S. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has built a sturdy, double-digit lead over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in New York ahead of Tuesday’s presidential primary there, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC New York/Marist poll found.

Clinton leads Sanders by 17 percentage-points, 57% to 40%, among likely Democratic primary voters, a result in line with her 14-point advantage in a Journal/NBC News/Marist poll released earlier in the week.

The back-to-back poll results suggest that Clinton is on the cusp of a pivotal victory that would help her regain momentum after a string of embarrassing defeats and that would deliver a blow to Sanders as the two Democrats gear up for the final stretch of voting.

At this point, it looks like Sanders needs a big moment to reset the race. But the new poll shows that most primary voters already have settled on a candidate, with roughly 70% of each candidate’s supporters saying they strongly back their pick.
