Greece’s leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has accused Spain and Portugal of leading what he calls a conspiracy to topple his anti-austerity government. Tsipras claims Madrid and Lisbon fear their own radical forces before elections in the two countries later this year. Tsipras also rejected criticism that his government has backed down from its anti-austerity position to secure an extension of its financial lifeline from the euro zone. He says anger among German conservatives shows Athens has won concessions. The accusations against Spain and Portugal come as Greeks have directed much of their anger at Germany over years of austerity dictated by international creditors. Berlin is the biggest contributor to Athens’ 240-billion-euro bailout. Greece has been grappling with its worst debt crisis since world war two.
