Foreign Investments in treasury bills issued by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) retreated to EGP 755 million at the end of last May, down from EGP 24.1 billion at the end of May 2011.
Foreign investments in government-debt instruments were down to the lowest level as foreign investors awaited a clearer pictures of economy and political position in Egypt to inject their investments.
The banks’ investments in treasury bills accounted for 67.7%, registering EGP 246 billion at the end of last May.
The public-sector banks’ investments in treasury bills reached EGP 117.5 billion and private-sector banks’ investments in treasury bills registered 101 billion. Foreign banks’ investment in treasury bills stood at EGP 15.4 billion and specialized banks’ investments in treasury bills was 11.9 billion at the end of last May.
