Egypt’s General Authority for Roads, Bridges, and Land Transport (GARBLT) said on Monday it plans to finish works on the new Fayoum-Al-Wahat road within next month.

Executed at a cost of 440 million pounds ($ 49.5 million), the road is expected to become operational by the end of this year.

Minister of Transportation Galal Al-Saeed, said Fayoum-Al-Wahat road project, which is a 125 km long, is part of the national road network’s major projects scheduled to be delivered in 2016.

This project will alleviate traffic congestion on both Cairo-Alexandria Agricultural Road and Cairo-Fayoum Desert Road, Al-Saeed added.

Meanwhile, Adel Tork, Head of General Authority for Roads and Bridges, stated that opening Fayoum-Al-Wahat Road was called off previously due to disputes with land owners. However, the government has managed to settle those disputes and construction work was resumed again.

The new road will help restore tourism and trade actions, Tork said, since it links Al-Wahat area with El Alamein road. In addition, it will make areas of Fayoum, Beni Suef and Zaafarana easily accessible.
