European stock markets posted broad-based gains at the open on Tuesday, boosted by better-than-expected earnings from bellwether Alcoa Inc. and inflation data from China. Consumer prices in China in March rose a softer-than-expected 2.1%, fueling hopes that the country will continue its monetary stimulus. The Stoxx 600 index rose 0.5% to 289.17.
The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index gained 0.7% to 6,318.81, while France’s CAC 40 index added 0.6% to 3,689.88. Germany’s DAX 30 index traded 0.6% higher at 7,708.78. Among individual stocks, shares of interdealer broker ICAP PLC dropped 3%, after reports the firm was subpoenaed due to alleged manipulation of interest-rate contracts.
