European stock markets opened lower on Tuesday, tracking Wall Street losses the prior day and a retreat in Asia overnight, with mining and bank stocks leading the way south.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index XX:SXXP -0.36% fell 0.3% to 270.82, with Banco Santander SA ES:SAN -1.40% SAN -1.43% down 1.2% and Rio Tinto PLC UK:RIO -1.55% RIO -0.58% AU:RIO -0.31% off 1.3%. The Spain IBEX 35 index XX:IBEX -0.83% fell 0.5% to 7,822.50, while the German DAX 30 index DX:DAX -0.09% was flat at 7,209.36 and the French CAC 40 index FR:PX1 -0.41% fell 0.1% to 3,501.24. The FTSE 100 index UK:UKX -0.20% fell 0.1% to 271.01.
Luxury-goods stocks were also trending lower, led by Burberry Group PLC UK:BRBY -17.31% , which slumped 17% after it said full-year profit would come in at the lower end of market expectations.
