Egypt’s Warraq island residents to sue government

by Yomna Yasser
Residents of Egypt’s Al-Warraq Island held a meeting on Friday to discuss ways to push back against the government island development plan, being carried out by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, and decided to file a lawsuit against the government in the State Council.

Yahya al-Shahat, a resident in Warraq, said that some 3,000 citizens of the island gathered to discuss how to file a lawsuit with the State Council against the government project, which will displace vast numbers who live on the island.

Shahat said in a statement to Al-Masry Al-Youm, that there is anger and outrage among the island residents, who were told by members of the House of Representatives, that the development plan would benefit the people.

“A large press conference will be held for the people of the island soon, which will be covered by all the international media. During the conference we’ll demand the government to issue a decision on what will be implemented on the island, so that we can use it against the government in court,” he said.

He pointed out that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi always reiterates that we are a state of law, and we will resort to the judiciary to rule on the spat between the government and us. Source: Al-Masry Al-Youm
