Egypt’s sports minister names dissolved Ahly board for a year

Egypt’s Youth and Sports Minister Khaled Abdel-Aziz appointed Ahly’s board members Sunday to administer the club for a year, or until their up-coming general-assembly, after the High Administrative Court earlier dissolved the management due to a “procedural failure.”

“This decision is to serve the interests of Ahly… This is the right decision for the Red Castle,” Abdel-Aziz told reporters on Sunday.

“I will contact Ahly’s chairman Mahmoud Taher to ask his opinion about the decision to know if there is any objection from the board members,” Egypt’s youth and sports minister added.

A Cairo administrative court decided to dissolve the board of Cairo’s popular club Ahly after accepting the proceedings of a lawsuit that nullified the 2014 elections, due to a “procedural failure.”

The board, led by Chairman Mahmoud Taher, appealed the decision before the Supreme Administrative Court though it was initially rejected.

The lawsuit, launched by two members of the club’s general assembly, demanded the freezing of election results, claiming that elections were called in a meeting that did not reach the quorum for voting.

This marked the first time for an Ahly board to be dissolved by a court ruling.

Ahly have traditionally been lauded for their administrative stability, cited by many as one of the main reasons for their huge success.

Taher has come under fire from the club’s supporters after the team failed to win any major title last season.
