Egypt’s Mohamed Salah can be EPL player of the season: Liverpool’s Henderson

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has hailed in-form teammate Egypt’s Mohamed Salah as the Premier League’s player of this season, insisting that the Egyptian’s previous sting at Chelsea helped in his recent eye-catching displays.

“Mo has been incredible,” Henderson was quoted as saying by the Express on Wednesday.

“I think playing in the Premier League before with Chelsea helped him because he knew what to expect of the physical demands in English football,” he added.

Salah joined Chelsea in 2014 from Swiss side Basel FC, but the experience was not a fruitful one; he only scored twice in 19 league appearances before leaving to Fiorentina in 2015.

“From the moment he linked up with us in pre-season, you thought ‘this lad can play’ – but since then he’s kicked on again, and he’s going from strength to strength,” Henderson explained.

“Confidence has played a big part in that, and he’s playing full of confidence now.”

Salah, who joined Liverpool last summer from the Serie A side Roma, has taken the Premier League by storm this season, scoring 23 goals to take his overall tally to 31 goals in 37 appearances  in all competitions.

The Pharaohs star is the second of the Premiere League’s two top scorers, just one behind leading scorer Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old winger, who spent two-and-a-half seasons in Italy’s Serie A playing for Fiorentina and AS Roma after departing Chelsea, could be the hero of the Premiere League this season according to Henderson.

“He’s scored so many goals, in so many different ways, and he’s been a massive influence for us. If he keeps performing at his current level, he’s definitely up there for the Premier League’s player of the season,” said the Liverpool captain.

“Top players are quick to develop an understanding on the pitch in terms of their movement, and the thing I really like about the three of them – Firmino, Salah, Mane – is that they don’t really care who scores the goals.

“A lot of strikers are selfish by nature, but they enjoy each other’s success and they appreciate the team giving them a platform to make things happen in the final third,” he concluded.

Liverpool currently lie third in the Premiere League table with 57points, 15 behind leaders Manchester City. Source: Ahram online
