On Tuesday, a fire at Beirut’s port turned shortly after into a massive explosion with a huge mushroom cloud that Lebanese officials said came from a stockpile of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse.
The blast resulted in the death of at least 100 people, injuring more than 4,000, according to Lebanon’s Red Cross.
Egypt has been following up closely on the disaster, with Elwi calling on Wednesday several Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Hassan Diab, Defence Minister Zeina Adra and Interior Minister Mohamed Fahmy.
He stressed to the Lebanese officials Egyptians’ condolences and deep sorrow for the traumatic incident, assuring Egypt’s solidarity with the brotherly Lebanese people.
The ambassador affirmed Egypt’s readiness to meet the needs of Lebanon to help overcome the crisis.
