Egypt’s demand for cement may decrease by 13-15 percent during the current year on the back of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, says Solomon Baumgartner Aviles, CEO of Lafarge Egypt.

He added that  cement production in the Egyptian market may decrease by 15 percent reaching 43 million tonnes by the end of this year.

COVID-19 has strongly impacted the building materials sector, and specifically the cement industry.

The cement sector has been severely affected since the pandemic’s beginning in addition to the recent ministerial decision to halt construction permits and the government crackdown on building code violations
